We are delighted to be partnering exclusively with The ExtraCare Charitable Trust in Coventry to recruit a Head of Governance. This role will oversee Governance, Assurance, Risk, Compliance and Health & Safety. This exciting leadership position is paying an attractive £85,000 per annum, plus a £6,456 Company Car Allowance.

The ExtraCare Charitable Trust is a registered charity established in 1988, based in Coventry. They employ 1250 staff, with a turnover of nearly £54m, offering 4199 homes for older people.

Their vision is 'Better Lives for Older People' and their mission is to 'create sustainable communities that provide homes older people want, lifestyles they can enjoy and care if it is needed.'

To deliver their vision and mission they essentially do three things:

  • Develop new villages.
  • Operate villages and schemes.
  • Support their villages, schemes and their 'extra-care' model through fundraising, advocacy & research.

Their inspirational locations offer vibrant communities for over 55's that support a healthy, active and independent lifestyle in later years. Since 1988, ExtraCare has been the UK's leading not-for-profit pioneer for retirement living, opening 20 locations around their Midlands base and further South.

As a charity their surpluses are re-invested into charitable activities - helping them provide better services and support.

Head of Governance will:

  • Ensure that the Governance of the Charity and its subsidiaries is efficiently and effectively managed, meeting regulatory and constitutional obligations.
  • Ensure effective Board and Committee liaison and management, with meetings which are well planned, managed, and ran.
  • Ensure all necessary reporting and statutory regulatory returns are accurate and on time.
  • Have oversight of Risk & Assurance, ensuring appropriate reporting is undertaken.
  • Develop and embed the Risk Management Strategy and Policy, providing high quality reports including risk early warning indicators to various forums, up to and including the Board.
  • Oversee the outsourced Internal Audit function alongside in-house auditing.
  • Lead on Health & Safety, with oversight of reporting and assurance.
  • Develop and embed the Safety Strategy providing high quality assurance, up to and including the Board.
  • Manage Data Protection for the Charity.
  • Develop and embed a data governance framework. Provide direction to support delivery of GDPR compliance working with the Head of IT (CISO). Oversee management subject access requests, and other GDPR-related activities.
  • Manage relationships with external lawyers, procuring and engaging legal advice as required.
  • Be a key member of the Senior Management Team (SMT).
  • Deputise for the Executive Director Governance & Compliance (Company Secretary) where required.

Head of Governance:

  • Relevant professional qualification, e.g. ICSA, law, accountancy, audit, business management.
  • Degree educated or significant management experience in a governance role.
  • Experience of supporting, influencing, and monitoring the strategic direction of an organisation with the ability to evidence working at Board level.
  • Previous work in governance /compliance in the Housing and/or Charity Sector.
  • Experience of successfully leading and managing people.
  • Ability to evidence previous report writing at Committee and Board level.
  • Experience managing / co-ordinating risk management activities.
  • Knowledge of HSE, Charity Commission, ICO and CQC regulatory compliance.
  • Keen focus on quality, customer service, best practice and value for money.
  • Role models behaviours and act with the highest level of professionalism, integrity and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates resilient leadership - ability to motive and inspire teams and colleagues.
  • Adaptable to change within a dynamic organisation and regulatory environment.
  • Flexible with the ability to work well under pressure, manage competing priorities, and deliver to strict deadlines.

Head of Governance:

  • £85,000, plus £6,456 Company Car Allowance.
  • 37.5 hours per week.
